Goal Statement

Every child and their family affected by cancer should receive comprehensive psychosocial assessment and access to holistic social support in alignment with their individual needs. The Psychosocial Support Task Force of the Indian Childhood Cancer Initiative (ICCI) works towards ensuring that psychological and social care is an integral component of pediatric oncology services across India.

Key Focus Areas

  • Develop and implement standardized psychosocial assessment tools, pathways, and processes, including education and training modules.
  • Map psychologists, psycho-oncologists, and social workers involved in pediatric oncology care across India.
  • Establish Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for social workers and patient navigators.
  • Facilitate training, awareness, and advocacy to strengthen psycho-oncology capacity nationwide.

Glimpses of Work

The Task Force successfully published a position statement on psychosocial support on 5th December 2024 in eCancer Medical Science. The publication outlines the key priorities for delivering psychological and social support to children with cancer and their families in India. (Link to the position statement)

The Special Interest Group for Paediatric Psycho-Oncology (SIGPPO) was established to create a common platform for professionals working in pediatric psycho-oncology. The group celebrated its first anniversary in 2025 and currently comprises 161 members from across the country, including pediatric oncologists, psychologists, psycho-oncologists, nurses, social workers, and trainees.

Monthly meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month, featuring national and international experts on diverse topics in pediatric psycho-oncology. In 2025, SIGPPO expanded by forming dedicated subgroups for research and academic development to strengthen knowledge sharing and evidence generation.

The Psychosocial Support Task Force of ICCI initiated the development of psychosocial care guidelines with a two-day foundational meeting held on 5th–6th September 2024 at Radisson Blu, New Delhi. The meeting brought together 50 participants, including psychologists, social workers, pediatric oncologists, and representatives from key psychosocial organizations. Extensive discussions and breakout sessions led to the identification of three primary focus areas for guideline development:

  • Evaluation / Triage / Referral.
  • Interventions.
  • Manpower and Training.

Building on this foundation, the ICCI organized the Psychosocial Guidelines Group Workshop on 3rd August 2025 at Narayana Health, Bangalore. The workshop convened members of the working group to review the drafted first three chapters—Evaluation, Interventions, and Manpower. The session emphasized peer review, feedback integration, and collaborative development to ensure national relevance and implement ability. The next steps involve finalizing these chapters and circulating them for broad consultation to guide the creation of national psychosocial care guidelines for children with cancer.

Guidelines Development Update

The first chapter, focusing on Evaluation and Assessment, has completed its first round of review. The second chapter, Interventions, is being prepared for its initial review. The first phase of the guidelines—comprising Evaluation, Interventions, and Manpower—will be finalized by October 2025.

Next Steps

Work will commence on the second phase of the guidelines.

A pilot project is being planned to implement the developed psychosocial care guidelines across selected pediatric oncology units.

To develop national standards for social workers in pediatric oncology.
